A short note on how this site is made, because the answer is unusually boring and that is deliberate.

How it is built

Static HTML written by hand, one stylesheet, no JavaScript at all. Photographs are our own. Nothing on these pages is loaded from another company’s server: no hosted fonts, no analytics, no embedded video, no social buttons, no maps.

What it collects

Nothing. There are no cookies, no local storage, no tracking pixels and no contact form. Server access logging is switched off, so the addresses of people who read these pages are not written down anywhere. If you email us, we keep the email until the job is finished and the invoice is settled.

Typography and colour

Body text is set in whichever serif your system provides — Georgia on most machines, Iowan Old Style on Apple ones. Small labels are set in the system interface face. Serving a webfont would mean a request to a third party for no real gain, so there is none.

Copies and reuse

Text and photographs on this site are ours. If you want to quote a paragraph in a discussion of bookbinding, do; if you want to lift the lot onto a supplier’s catalogue page, ask first.

Corrections

If something here is wrong — and on a subject this old there is always something — write and say so. Corrections get made and the page keeps no record of the mistake, which is the one advantage of a site this small.
